About the award

The Australian Institute of International Affairs, Queensland, wishes to encourage and support Australian students at Queensland Universities to undertake study in the Asia Pacific region. This scholarship was established in 2015 in line with the organisation’s mission of promoting understanding and interest in international affairs.

AIIA Queensland will provide this $2500 scholarship annually to support approved educational activity.

Selection criteria


1. Candidates must be current students of any Queensland-based university
2. Candidates must be Australian citizens or permanent residents
3. Candidates must have a current AIIA membership.

Successful candidates will have/be:

a) A strong academic record:

  • Candidates must demonstrate achievement of consistently strong results

b) Strong communication and interpersonal skills:

  • Candidates must possess sufficient confidence and capability to satisfy the panel that they will succeed in their chosen educational experience, and  act as effective ambassadors for the AIIA upon return

c) Motivated by genuine academic/personal interest in their chosen educational activity and target country:

  • Candidate’s personal statement will be used to assess  this

d) Demonstrated awareness of how the educational activity and scholarship experience may enhance the candidate’s academic abilities and/or further candidate’s career aspirations:

  • Candidate’s personal statement will be used to assess this

e) Demonstrated suitable links between their chosen educational activity and the AIIA objectives of ‘promoting an interest in and understanding of international affairs’

f) Demonstrated sincere interest in international affairs

Desirable qualities:

  • Previous involvement in activities that explore or help promote Australia-Asia Pacific activities: such as public forums, dialogues, previous cultural exchange, youth-led organisations, student societies
  • Some awareness of history/nature of relations between Australia and the candidate’s target country

Selection Panel

A selection panel consisting of an academic representative from three Queensland based universities will review all applications and make a recommendation to the Council of AIIA Queensland during September. The successful applicants will be notified as soon as the Council has accepted the recommendations.

The successful applicant must provide evidence of the travel planned before the scholarship is paid, and will provide a report to the AIIA Queensland Council after the educational experience has been completed and the student has returned to Queensland. The successful students may also be invited to give a short talk on their experience at an AIIA meeting of members.

The funding for these scholarships has been made through donations to the AIIA Queensland.

How to apply

Using the application form, applicants should provide a statement supporting their application, covering the proposed activity to be undertaken. It should include information on their current course of study, and the endorsement of a relevant academic supervisor. It should also detail any previous international study. Any other funding support for this proposal should be declared. It is not expected that the scholarship will cover all expenses.
