My lab works on the biology, ecology and evolution of fishes and occasional inverts. Evolutionary models exploring the role of morphological innovation in diversity (or lack thereof) use examples from the order Beloniformes (including flyingfishes, longtoms, sauries and halfbeaks). I am interested in structure and function and how this relates to the ways in which fishes interact with their environment. Three main lines have been developed from this: clarifying the roles of grazers in reef systems, elucidating the trophic systems in the evolving ecologies of major water storages, and examining the invasion and use of soft sediment shores by fishes.
