Mike works on the behavioural and population ecology of marine mammals. One of his main areas of interest is the use of sound by humpback whales and current research projects include the transmission of humpback whale songs as cultural traits among populations at an ocean basin scale, the behavioural ecology of migrating humpback whales and the effects of anthropogenic sound on marine mammals. He also conducts population surveys of the Australian east coast humpback whale population which has been recovering rapidly from near-extirpation in the early 1960s.
