My research examines stress, reproduction and chemical communication in marsupials, the effects of stress on ageing and neurodegenerative diseases, and vertebrate ecophysiology. Our laboratory was the first to describe the role of free cortisol in the spectacular annual mortality of males in populations of small dasyurid marsupials. We use sensitive endocrine techniques to analyse hormones, collected both in the laboratory and in the field, to interpret metabolic and reproductive strategies that are used by a range of vertebrates as they adapt to changes in the physical and social environment during their life history.
