My research focuses on the ecology and functional significance of marine invertebrate symbioses with dinoflagellates in genus Symbiodinium. Various factors modulate the symbiotic partnerships (ecology, evolution, bio-geography, specificity), and I am currently working on questions pertaining to the potential of reef corals to move into higher latitudes under the pressures of climate change. Various subtropical and high-latitude coral communities along the eastern Australian coastline are studied to understand the role of coral symbionts in setting limits to species ranges as well as experimentally testing whether generational turnover in symbiotic partnerships may facilitate range shifts. I am a member of Prof John Pandolfi's Marine Palaeoecology Lab.
