I am a PhD student at the Coral Reef Ecosystems lab at UQ. I am currently doing experiments at Heron Island Research Station with coral reef physiology.

 

I am looking for a responsible and committed person to be my volunteer at Heron Island for 2 to 4 weeks in August 2017. I will need help with my in situ coral experiment.

Dives and snorkeling will be required, as I will be deploying incubation chambers at the reef flat and slope. I also will require assistance with measurements on my corals at the research station.

 

The work will involve:

 

·       Set up and preparation for incubation deployments at the reef.

·       Transport the coral back to the station and redeployment.

·       Perform measurement buoyant weight, volume, 3D photos and lab incubation.

·       Retrieve environmental data loggers for cleaning, data collection and re-deployment.

 

 

 Volunteer Requirements:

 

·       High experience and diver’s certification is preferred.

  • UQ Restricted Scientific SCUBA Diver require at least ‘Advanced Open Water’ diver certification with an accredited diver training organization, with at least 15 hours and 15 dives logged since course completion, of which 500 minutes were spent within 10 metres of the working depth, with 3 dives logged within the past six months and in sub tropical waters;

·       Current dive medical AS/NZ 2299.1,

·       Advanced first aid training, oxygen provision certificates

·       complete inductions and registration forms with my lab.

 

My lab will cover accommodation and travel. However, the volunteer will have to be responsible for his/her own food.

 

There will be some spare time for you to explore Heron Island and snorkel  around the island!
