Job Position:
Volunteer work
Closing Date:
Thursday, September 5, 2019

We are looking for a boat driver to join us on a 5 day research trip to Heron Island on the Southern Great Barrier Reef. The dates for the trip are from the 18th to the 23rd September 2019, though the volunteer would need to be able to get to Brisbane for early on the 17th so that we can depart for the Heron Island ferry port in Gladstone, ready for our Island transfer on the 18th. The team will then return back to Brisbane on the 23rd. All expenses between leaving and returning to Brisbane will be covered by the research project.

The research project is to revisit coral sites around Heron island to measure the growth, survival and reproduction of coral colonies tagged in September 2018. The research team currently consists of 4 PhD researcher divers from the UK and the University of Queensland, and the volunteers role would be to drive the boat between survey sites and the Heron Island research station. Heron Island is a remote but stunning Island location, and there will be time on the trip for reef snorkelling (weather permiting). Prior experience of working on Heron Island is not essential as training is given by Research station boating staff, however anyone interested in this position must have prior boating experience, and a current boat drivers license and boat radio license valid for use in Queensland.

If this sounds of interest to you, please don't hesitate to get in touch - happy to provide more details.
