Susanne Schmidt's research on Australian plants and ecosystems focuses on plant nutrition, ecophysiology and soil biology, ecological agriculture, sustainable use of native plants and restoration of degraded land. Exploring fundamental questions of resource use, competition and complementarity in context of nutrient pollution, greenhouse gases and carbon and integrating from big picture to molecular, current projects examine soil biology in forest and agricultural soils, traits of resource use efficiency in giant grasses (sugarcane, wild grasses, weeds), bio-fortification effects of organic compounds,  growth and optimised mixed-species rainforest plantations in the tropics, and sustainable use of spinifex grassland in Australia’s arid zone.
